General Information

The two landmark buildings that make up Northumbria University’s City Campus East house the Schools of Design, Law and Business.

Built on a former brownfield site and providing a floor area of 24,000m2, the city centre campus illustrates how sustainability can play an integral role in urban renewal.

The buildings feature mesh panels to provide solar shading, a sedum roof, rain harvesters, sensor-controlled heating and lighting and a solar panel hot water system.

We led the design team in the development of the buildings’ unique stainless steel mesh façade which combines solar shading with eye-catching aesthetics. Workshops and site trials were held which fed into the design process. Value engineering resulted in a design which used only a small number of standardised components to create a faceted repeating pattern, minimising fabrication costs.

To ensure skill levels were of the highest quality, we used directly employed labour to undertake all reinforced concrete works, joinery, scaffolding and external masonry. This meant the project benefited from a well-trained, flexible but safe workforce supervised by an experienced team.

The principles of sustainability were built into this project from the start with the team working together to optimise the use of resources.

All arisings from excavation were accommodated under suspended ground floor slabs or in landforms and 95% of material from demolition reused on site for fill and sub base.

Waste was segregated into streams including timber, plasterboard, glass and metals to maximise the potential for reuse and recycling.

We liaised with the university’s staff and students throughout the project to ensure the building would meet all their requirements. Members of the project team gave lectures and presentations using the new buildings as a working example.

Following completion of the campus, the university awarded us the contract to build Sport Central, a state-of-the-art, three-storey sports facility. Highly flexible, the centre’s three main sports halls can be transformed to provide a 3,000-seat event space. The facility also includes a 25m swimming pool, a sprint track, three squash courts, laboratory facilities and a performance analysis suite.

The campus was named North East Landmark of the Year and Public Sector Award Winner at the 2007 Landmark Awards.

It also won the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers Low Carbon New Build Project of the Year Award 2007.

City Campus East was named Project of the Year and won the Design & Innovation Award and the Sustainability Award at the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors Renaissance Awards 2008.

The development was presented with a Civic Trust Award in 2009.
