A new state-of-the-art temporary stadium enhances the experience for spectators at the world-renowned Edinburgh Tattoo.

A new purpose-built temporary stadium provides audiences at the annual Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo with a full range of modern facilities.
The 8,600-seat stadium transforms Edinburgh Castle’s esplanade into an intimate venue for the more than 200,000 spectators who watch the event live. The steel-framed structure is designed to be quicker to erect and dismantle than the previous stands and provides improved access, comfort and sightlines.

We worked with our specialist project
partner Nussli Switzerland to develop the design for the temporary
event grandstands.
A full-scale mock-up of a stand section was built to determine the optimum method of construction and in-depth analysis undertaken to ensure the stadium could be erected in the required timeframe.
The 1,000 tonne steel framed structure is configured to accommodate a number of permanent monuments, one of which was relocated under an operation which involved extending a section of the esplanade’s retaining wall.
With the site officially classed as a monument, the project team worked closely with Historic Scotland to achieve permissions for all works carried out and ensure access for the agency’s staff was maintained.
