A structurally complex building, our team worked to ensure its design is coordinated with the plant’s complicated process installation.

In addition to early engagement and detailed planning to ensure the successful integration of the processes, 3D modelling was used for clash detection, sequencing and formulation of maintenance strategies.

Our alternative proposal to relocate the rooftop photovoltaic cells from their original position alongside the factory’s rooflights provides safer maintenance access.

A series of health promotion events covering topics ranging from giving up smoking to high blood pressure were held along with a number of well-being clinics.

“It is a tribute to all concerned on the project that Sir Robert Mc Alpine has not recorded one single reportable injury during 850,000 hours of continual work on site. Given that at the height of the build there were over 250 contractors on site, it is an amazing achievement.” AkzoNobel Site Manager Jeff Hope

“The team at Sir Robert Mc Alpine brought an exceptional level of expertise to the project ... There have been challenges along the way, but that is understandable given that we are building a truly magnificent, fully sustainable facility, that will be a global showcase for our decorative paints division.” AkzoNobel Site Manager Jeff Hope

The project was honoured with a Gold Considerate Constructors Scheme National Site Award in 2014.

The scheme praised the team’s “excellent commitment to operative health and welfare”, adding: “An equally strong commitment to safety, apprenticeships and internal career opportunities helped this site produce an exemplar overall performance of great credit to all involved.”
