Exeter’s award-winning Princesshay retail and leisure development is the biggest single investment in regeneration in the city’s history.
The new centre opens up the heart of Exeter, providing views of the 12th century Cathedral Church of St Peter and the City Wall.
Located in the heart of a conservation area, Princesshay is built in a distinctive style designed to complement the city’s heritage and includes more than 60 retail and leisure outlets along with 120 apartments.
More than 90% of waste arising from
demolition of the existing shopping centre was crushed and re-used.
We also used sustainable and locally sourced materials wherever
possible.
Because of its city centre location we used silent piling techniques to minimise noise disturbance from the development.
Princesshay is the latest in a series of
successful projects undertaken for client Land Securities.
It follows our delivery of shopping centres in cities across the country including Southampton, Birmingham, Gateshead and Doncaster.
“Land Securities is very proud of our involvement with Sir Robert McAlpine and the wider Project Team on taking a very proactive and forward looking role on this complicated city centre redevelopment and our liaison with the community and local authority teams.” - Land Securities.
The Princesshay site was awarded Silver
by the Considerate Constructors Scheme in 2008, the judges
describing it as “an excellent ambassador, not only for the
contractor, but for the construction industry in general”.
Princesshay won the British Council of Shopping Centres’ highest accolade, the Supreme Gold award for 2007, the judges calling it “an elegant example of retail-led mixed use development”. The awards reward excellence in retail-led developments and recognise projects that improve the quality of the built environment.
