General Information

The vast Cardinal Place development in Victoria Street is a stunning
10-storey addition to the London skyline.

Featuring almost entirely glazed façades and deep floor plates punctuated by atria, this mixed-use scheme provides 94,500m2 of floor space. Upper floors offer Category A office accommodation with retail outlets at ground level.

A single-storey retail space with feature roof garden adjoins the development’s southern façade, offering the public a relaxing place to escape the hustle and bustle of city life.

Huge concrete encased steel beams were found spanning the Circle and District line London Underground tunnels that pass beneath the site. Hydrodemolition in the form of high pressure lances was used to cut the concrete from the steel beams which were removed using a 1,000 tonne crane. A concrete transfer structure was then constructed to divert loading away from the tunnels which remained operational throughout.

Detailed risk analysis and assessment enabled the use of 1.8m diameter piles within 1m of the tunnels. We calculated vibration limits for demolition operations and undertook safe load assessment of the tunnels for all construction and abnormal loads.

This project is one of a series of contracts undertaken for client Land Securities which includes the Bullring in Birmingham and The Gate in Newcastle.

Cardinal Place won best Commercial Project at the 2007 Local Authority Building Control Built in Quality Awards.

The project was also Highly Commended in the Considerate Builders Scheme Awards in 2004.
