General Information

45 Church Street in the heart of Birmingham’s business district provides 12,000m2 of high quality office accommodation and two basement levels.

This new city landmark features a stunning 13-storey glazed wall façade. Roof terraces on the third and tenth floors and glass-backed scenic lifts offer panoramic views across the city.

The development replaces a 1970s office block, providing double the floor space of the previous structure on the same footprint.

We devised an alternative foundation design which provided a simpler, more commercially efficient solution.

Our Design Group formulated the temporary propping required to create the building’s 8m deep basement and provided ongoing analysis throughout a process that included underpinning an adjacent Grade II listed building.

We also advised on the construction of the post-tensioned floor slabs that, because of their thinner section, allowed the client to include an extra storey in the building.

45 Church Street won a Silver Award from the Considerate Constructors Scheme in 2008. The team was praised by the judges for showing “exemplary public care and accountability”.

The judges continued: “The company ethos is to be a caring contractor and this site demonstrated the lengths to which Sir Robert McAlpine is prepared to go to achieve the highest Considerate Constructors standards and to be a credit to the industry.”

The scheme followed this success with a Bronze Award in 2009.
