General Information

As a member of Autolink Concessionaires we operate and maintain 90km of the M6 from Millbank to Carlisle.

This 30-year Design Build Finance and Operate concession included upgrading 28km of carriageway from two lanes to three in each direction and construction of a 28km local distributor road.

Improvements included interchanges, tunnels over the West Coast Main Line and a bridge over the river Evan.

Under the original design, along 10km of the road to be widened both new lanes were to be added on one side of the carriageway. Following an extensive value engineering exercise we chose an alternative symmetrical widening option which added a lane each side. This simplified the logistics in terms of construction and traffic management.

Retaining the road’s original centreline also meant almost 100% of the old carriageway levels could remain. This single value engineering decision played a major part in the project’s early delivery.

Work took place close to residential and environmentally sensitive areas. Close liaison with local authorities, the community and local experts on rivers and wildlife minimised the impact of construction.

Works to realign adjacent river Evan Water at two locations were programmed to ensure minimal disturbance to the watercourse’s aquatic cycle.

We undertake our planned maintenance activities at night to reduce the effect on traffic. Our fleet of fuel efficient gritters use the latest technology to accurately spread their salt, reducing the amount used.

Our Neighbourhood Charter has strengthened our relationship with local stakeholders, providing a point of contact for the public and a framework for consultation with communities and their representatives.

An innovative IT solution was designed specifically for the joint venture. More than 200 personnel from across the project partners were linked to a bespoke fully integrated information retrieval and document control system. This gave them permanent access to virtually all the documents needed to administer the project.

Autolink Concessionaires is a joint venture with Amey, Taylor Woodrow, Barr and Innisfree.

The M6/M74 Extension DBFO scheme won a Commendation as a Project Advancing the Art of Civil Engineering in Scotland at the Saltire Civil Engineering Awards in 2001.

The project was also Highly Commended in the Major Project category of the British Construction Awards 2000.

The scheme was Highly Commended in the Information Technology Award category of the 1998 Construction Industry Awards.
