General Information

The extension to the National Composites Centre comprises a three-storey Knowledge and Innovation block linked to a high volume manufacturing and large assembly area.

Facilities include laboratory specification cleanrooms, freezer stores, training, conference, office and ancillary spaces. The extension houses three gantry cranes and one of the largest hydraulic presses of its kind in Europe for high volume composite manufacturing.

Our Design Group’s geotechnical and structural input helped value engineer the rock excavation, foundations and the heavily loaded ground bearing slab elements. The in-house technical review and redesign of the substructure package assisted the site team in achieving its cost and programme objectives.

We worked collaboratively to engineer a cost-effective alternative solution for the housing of the equipment which powers and runs the press.

Ninety-two per cent of construction waste was diverted from landfill during delivery of the BREEAM ‘Excellent’ development.

Maximising local involvement was a key aspiration for our team, the project recording an average monthly local labour figure of 71%.

The project was named winner of the RICS South West Design through Innovation award 2015.
