We delivered the scheme to widen 23km of the M1 in the East Midlands under budget and five months early.
The project to widen the M1 between junctions 25 and 28 adds a fourth lane to the three-lane carriageway in each direction. The new lanes improve safety and reduce congestion for drivers on the 23.5km stretch of road.
Involved from an early stage, we worked with our project partners to optimise improvement works which included re-surfacing with low-noise materials, reconstructing and improving bridges and installation of 45 new overhead gantries.
A controlled motorway system delivering live traffic information was incorporated into the project with no impact on delivery date.
Reconfiguring the carriageways to a compact motorway design minimised the scheme’s widening footprint, delivering a significant cost saving.
Through careful design and efficient realignment of the busy carriageways we avoided the need for contraflow.
Parallel widening was used to progress works simultaneously on both carriageways, shortening the overall programme.
We successfully constructed a new bridge across the motorway to a tight overnight deadline. Timed to minimise disruption to drivers, a stretch of the road was closed and two cranes set up on the carriageways to lift four massive girders into position.
60% of the hard shoulder was retained as part of the new Lane 1 construction, providing a 16,000 tonne reduction in CO2.
We worked with the Environment Agency to develop a resource efficient design solution which enabled all road planing materials to be recycled, including those normally disposed of as hazardous waste.
100,000m3 of spoil was diverted from landfill and reused to re-profile the site compound and local farmland. 30,000m3 of material was used in a bund built alongside the motorway at the request of a farmer.
Bat boxes provided an alternative home for a colony living under one of the widened bridges, while under a Local Seed Initiative 30,000 of 150,000 trees and shrubs planted were propagated from seeds collected from nearby forests.
Working as part of an integrated team with the Highways Agency, this project was undertaken in joint venture with Vinci Construction Grands Projets, Morgan Sindall and our consultants Gifford-WSP. The project benefited from a single delivery team approach in which input from the supply chain was incorporated as early as possible.
The project won a Silver Award at the Considerate Constructors Scheme National Site Awards 2011 and was honoured with a Green Apple Environment Award from the Green Organisation.
