General Information

The McLaren Production Centre is a sleek and technically sophisticated supercar manufacturing facility.

The building comprises a 12,000m2 basement and 20,000m2 ground floor featuring large open spaces with minimal columns. The centre is connected to the neighbouring McLaren Technology Centre via a subterranean walkway. Visitors enter through a glass rotunda, a spiral walkway leading to a mezzanine level overlooking the 6m high production hall.

With 1,350 piles across the basement, we devised an alternative programme-efficient solution which avoided the need to lay a crushed concrete pile mat that would have to be dug out later.

Our in-house Design Group worked closely with the site team to achieve a fast turnaround of design information and to develop key elements such as the waterproofing and tension pile head detail.

All the excavated material from the 200,000m3 open cut excavation to embed the building into the landscape was retained and used to re-profile the site

68 mature trees were transplanted from the site into a nursery area to the rear of the development prior to the start of the bird nesting season. A number of other trees were replanted on site to help screen the development.

Prior to the start of construction, a dewatering operation saw well points sunk around the perimeter of the buidling, our project team working with the Enivronment Agency to secure discharge consent into the nearby river.

With all mechanical and electrical services emanating from the neighbouring McLaren Technology Centre, we liaised closely with the client’s engineers to ensure all system integrations were executed without disrupting McLaren’s ongoing operations.

The centre won the Judge’s Special Award at the British Construction Industry Awards 2012.
