General Information

We redeveloped 16 schools in Newcastle upon Tyne under the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme.

The phased project involved the development, design and delivery of refurbishment, extension and replacement schemes for primary and secondary schools across the city. Work included the provision of external facilities including multi use games areas and sports pitches.

Throughout the project we have worked with the schools to enhance the curriculum, support future educational development and provide work experience and apprenticeship opportunities.

At Walkergate School all demolition materials were recycled or reused, while at West Jesmond Primary sandstone sills and wooden flooring were recycled, and glazed bricks salvaged for reuse at the Beamish Museum.

Our environmentally responsible strategy for managing soil contamination during construction of Sir Charles Parsons School and Walker Technology College enabled development to take place on a site which had previously proved unviable.

As part of the BSF initiative our activities were used to enrich the curriculum for pupils. Several students worked alongside project teams as part of their work experience programme.

Working with Newcastle City Council, Building Schools for the Future Investments, Parsons Brinkerhoff and Robertson Capital Projects as part of the Local Education Partnership, we will manage and maintain these schools for 25 years.

In addition to our BSF activities we are also undertaking further educational projects for the local authority, including construction of Central Walker Primary School and Westgate Hill Primary School.

“Sir Robert McAlpine has continually and significantly supported Aura in achieving key successes that ensure efficient and effective relationships are embarked upon and maintained throughout the duration of the build programme.” David Hosken, Project Manager for Aura Newcastle Ltd

“Communication from the project manager and his team is exemplary and should be commended with regards to their approach in ensuring that our staff and pupils are kept up to date with the latest progress and assisting where they can to help the school run smoothly and efficiently. Working within a live school always presents difficulties but Sir Robert McAlpine has made it seem effortless.” - Headteacher of Benfield School

Our Walker Technology College site team won a Gold Award at the Considerate Constructors Scheme National Site Awards 2012, while our team on the neighbouring Sir Charles Parsons School picked up Gold in 2011. West Jesmond Primary School was honoured with Silver in the 2010 awards.

Knop Law Primary School was recognised with a RIBA award for architectural excellence in 2011, the judges commenting: “Knop Law may well turn out to represent an important moment in time, marking a return to core values of how children are nurtured and taught in intuitive and ambitious surroundings.”

The school also won the Accessibility Award and the Lord Mayor’s Special Award at the 2011 Lord Mayor’s Design Awards which celebrate the best of the city’s architecture.

Aura Newcastle, our schools joint venture with Parsons Brinckerhoff and Robertson FM, was named winner of the Best Private Sector Consortium at the Public Private Finance Awards 2009.
